Front-Row Seats

Once a year we get front-row seats to the fireworks.

Our daughter's home lies adjacent to the large open field where Cedar Hills holds their annual fireworks show during Cedar Hills Days. We take our lawn chairs and blankets and set up on her back lawn to watch the show. In fact, we're so close that we have to be careful not to get a kinked neck from looking straight up in the air for nearly a half hour.

From our vantage point, there is nothing between us and ground zero so we are able to see the fireworks from the ground up. That's especially nice for those that are designed to be lower to the ground.

One series was especially low and beautiful. They were lit right at ground level and rose only about 30-40 feet in the air and looked like bright white bushes lit up by thousands and thousands of tiny white lights. There were about a dozen of these "bushes" in the series. I'm sure that most people in the surrounding neighborhood weren't able to see them because they just didn't get very high.

One feature of the Cedar Hills fireworks display that is either anticipated or dreaded (depending on your investment in local real estate) is the chance of the fireworks causing small fires on the ground when a cinder stays hot too long and lands on something dry and flammable. There are usually a few small such fires in the empty field where the show is held because it is just a field of weeds. Which brings up another advantage of having the fireworks show held my daughter's back yard--to avoid problems, the city makes sure that the weeds are mown down to reduce the chance of fires and they always have a couple of water trucks on hand to douse any fires that do spring up.

As I said, there are usually a few of these small side-shows to watch during the regular show going on overhead. However, last night there weren't any, at least none that we saw. That was probably due, at least in part, to the recent monsoon rain showers we've had the last couple of days. In fact, the whole fireworks show was postponed from Saturday night to Monday night because of a rain and wind storm that didn't ease up until about 1 minute after the city officially cancelled the show for the night.

All in all, it made for an enjoyable time with family and friends watching the fireworks from our front-row seats.

This year was good. A little boring on the "wild fire" front, but good. I especially appreciated the absence of soot and ash in my eyes that the lack of wind provided.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show. My husband on the other hand was very disappointed that there weren't any fires. In fact he was texting throughout the whole show.

Conner had fun running around in the dark. And then didn't want to get off the swings and go home.
